FAQ

We are looking at purchasing an operable wall for a school. Where do we start and what should be considered?

First, call your local GLYDE Design Specialist to assist. They will help guide you through the process so you have a fit-for-purpose system that delivers with many years of service.

In the meantime, consider these things:

  • What and whom would the space be used for?
  • What is the desired acoustic performance required for the space?
  • How often will the wall be operated or set up?
  • Do you require a writable or pinnable surface?
  • How important is light transfer or visual connectivity between the spaces?

Are there panel size limitations?

Yes.

Maximum height for Optica acoustic operable walls is 3.0m and maximum width for each panel is 1.2m.

For panel sizes exceeding these limitations, contact GLYDE for further assistance.

Can acoustic operable wall systems be adjusted? My panel is caught up or digging into the floor.

First, we need to establish if the issue is with the Optica panels or the acoustic retractable seal.

The bottom retractable seal may be catching the floor. This may happen when trying to move the panels and would result in difficulty moving the panels.

If the bottom seals are making full contact with the floor, then use your removable handle, deactivate the seals by rotating the handle half a rotation.

This should raise the retractable seals and the panel should now be clear of the ground to move freely.

If this does not fix the problem or if you notice anything out of the ordinary, then contact the GLYDE team to assist you further.

Are Optica glazed and solid panels interchangeable and compatible with one another?

Yes.

The Optica acoustic operable wall systems have been designed to accommodate the requirement of board and glass construction in the one system if required.

Check out our projects for a sampling of the different practical and design elements Optica offers.

Are the GLYDE products attainable on budget sensitive projects?

Our systems have been designed to provide our customers with a premium range of products at an affordable price. When compared to other ‘like for like’ systems in the market, GLYDE has proven to be the most price competitive option for builders and architects.

In the event of a glass breakage, can the sliders and operable wall panel faces be replaced on site without the need to dismantle the systems?

Yes, the systems have been designed with serviceability in mind and to ensure minimal disruption for the end-user.

Is GLYDE a new business?

Aluminium Industries launched GLYDE in 2020. The team that brought GLYDE to the market have over 100 years of (collective) experience in this specialised field. From our Designers, Specification and Sales teams through to our Projects and Installations teams, we are proud to be able to provide this fantastic range of acoustic products for our customers.

What is the advantage of the automatic retractable seal over the fixed seal?

Seal choices are based on both the panel configuration and application.

To make a choice, consider how often the room will be reconfigured and who will be moving the panels.

If you have a single-panel system that requires frequent set-ups, an automatic retractable seal may be right for you as it involves less operation.

I am working on a project featuring an Optica acoustic operable wall system and require a GLYDE specification code. Where do I find this information?

The Optica Specification Matrix gives you the GLYDE code.

The matrix provide an explanation of the makeup of the Optica system. Our Architectural Specification Managers are also available to assist with all of your specification and design requirements.

I've reviewed the configurations and sizes shown on the website and in the Optica technical manual. Are there more options?

GLYDE’s design engineers have the expertise and experience to offer bespoke solutions to many of your concept designs. Contact us to speak with an Architectural Design Specialist about your project requirements.

How do I access CAD files to put details into my plans?

We’re happy to help supply you with CAD documentation. Contact our Architectural Specifications team. We’ll review your project’s requirements and facilitate access to the correct details for each of the Optica operable wall systems in your project.

Is the GLYDE Team able to provide specifications for me?

Definitely.

We’re happy to help with specification documents. You’ll be able to add these in the project documentation for tender.

I’m a construction professional and would like to purchase and install the Optica operable wall system myself. How do I do this?

GLYDE offers Optica as a supply and installation model.

Our acoustic operable wall systems require specialist trained installers to ensure the systems meet the acoustic performance standards, DDA compliance, and additional safety aspects of the systems.

Is fixing/suspension from structural support beams included in Optica's operable wall system?

Yes.

Optica installation teams will drill and fix from support beams installed by others to GLYDE requirements.

The structural beam will need to be engineered to our system’s specifications. The GLYDE team can provide the requirements for each system in the project, ensuring the installation process is smooth and structural detailing is resolved early in the project.

I am learning about operable walls and programming for a new build. Do the tracks and panels get installed at the same time? What is the risk of damage during the remainder of the build?

In most cases we would only install tracks and panels in the same install when it’s a refurbishment or existing building. With the new build you describe, tracks should be installed relatively early before ceilings and wall sheeting is set. This allows for all elements to be aligned and the correct coordination between trades. Panel installation can be included in the finishing trades just prior to the final clean.

Feel free to chat with one of our experienced projects team members for further information and assistance.
